I would forgo the relay. I have an 84 Softail and back when she was new I went through starter relays like breath mints. I finally solved the problem in a similar fashion as has been done to your bike. I eventually went to an open primary and kick start only because I got tired of dealing with those weak electrical parts. And I think that open primaries and points ignition are exceedingly cool.

Well the bike was converted over to a points as well...
80's Harley wiring wasn't that great when it was new...don't think I would go through a lot of trouble to keep it stock. A lot of aftermarket company's make complete wiring systems that use modern connectors...all the wires are labeled, which makes for a really easy install...and you can pick up some modern features, like self canceling turn signals while you are at it.
I have wired several bikes with this one...works great.
Tom84FXST,
Got that Ultima Wiring kit....Just a couple of questions. When wiring this kit up there is no need for the factory circuit breakers or flasher correct? Where's the best place to start? lol I'm figuring starting out with the handle bar controls and going from there...is there a better way?
