It's been 3 years since I last started my 1996 FLHTCI and that season I had all the fluids changed. The bike only has 22000 miles on it and probably 150 miles since the fluid change. Today I installed a brand new battery. The bike started right up. I let it run for about a minute with rpm's slightly above idle. I noticed my oil pressure guage was reading at 40 psi. I can't remember what it used to read under normal riding conditions but on idle it read around 20 psi. Is this normal or is something mechanically wrong due to the bike sitting? Thanks for any/all answers.
Once it's up to full opetating temperature, you can kind of use the oil pressure gauge as a thermometer. If it's a cold day (low 40's), pressure at cruising speeds settles in to 15+ pounds. If it's a blistering hot day, maybe 10 pounds.
As long as your's settles in when warm, it's probably fine.
40 psi is ok. Only when the oil is below 65 degrees.
Now, if you had 40psi at 180F, that would be a relief spring malfunction at the oil pump. Ride yer bike!
