Default multiple ignition module failures

Hi all,

I am now on my third OEM ignition module on my 1993 FXSTS in three months! Mine doesn't get hot and then re-start after it cools. It just shuts off and never starts again! The first failure was the original module, then a new OEM module and finally a used one off of Ebay.

I have run every check in the FSM twice and checked the charging system to make sure it is not over-charging. I have an extra ground strap from the battery to the engine. I have checked every inch of the wiring harnesses and tested every wire and all grounds. I replaced the pickup module last year as its' potting was melting, but it was still running fine.

What normally causes a module to fail? It could help lead further diagnosis.

The only thing I haven't checked is charging system output amperage. I have not actually done voltage drop tests on the system. My ignition switch has had contact problems as of late, so I have a new one on the way.

I am about to go to an aftermarket system, but whatever my problem is might smoke a new system too!

Any ideas area appreciated.

some original systems work fine for life it seems and piles have been a Pinta

the trigger in the cone has also caused the module to fry

ultima ignition mod is the one I turn to - the coil they sell with it is junk use your OEM one or buy a dyna single fire and go that way

its like an oil thing who make the best but I have installed 100 if we put one in and keep them in stock

If you want another OEM module I have a couple on the shelf that worked when I took them off the bike.

I can send you one for the cost of shipping if it will help you.

Change out your coil, and don't use a low impedance one.

Stock coil should be 5 ohm.

5.0 ohm coil or 3.0 ohm? Pretty sure my 94 calls for 3.0 ohms? Is there is a reason for the 5.0 coil and I'm missing something? YD

Yeah you're right it's 3 ohm.
The single fire is 1.5 ohm and for some reason I got the two mixed up in my head.

I blame it on Monday!!!!

wrong again - 1 and 1/2 ohm coil is a 6 volt antique for the most part

3.0 ohm coils come mostly 12 volt BUT are available in 6 volt as well you need to know what your doing when ordering

5.0 coil is a point ignition coil

now variables also exists like 1.8 2.1 3.0 6 volt - then 12 volt 1.5 - 2.8 and also point ignition 4,8 and 5.2 it depends who is making it and for what

and I am sure other OHM numbers are around I did not list

to make it simple - evo 3.0 ohm or around that is fine the lower the OHM the hotter the coil is
