Here is a picture of an 86 with the hole in the side of the top tripple clamp.
My 85 has the screws in there.

It's just a holdover from the old days when all wide glide trees all came that way, much cheaper & easier than redoing a casting mold to change it at the base production level. Plus side is the tapped holes can be used for several add-ons.

Be careful of nomenclature... Wide Glide indicates to me FXWG... FL or FLH, denotes what you are trying to convey more appropriately..

Same upper tree between the 3 of them so why split hairs, point I was making is it's a common tree.

And the final point is.... that screw does nothing for your suspension. Feel free to use it as needed to mount an accessory, or leave the hole empty if it suits you. Good luck.

yes, the 1985 FXWG comes with the screw in the top tree. Can't remember if it's long enough the prevent the fork cap from turning. The fork cap has 2 flat sides.
