Default Help Me Figure Out This Sound

Either I just noticed this, or it started a few hundred miles ago.

Any ideas?

Sounds to me that your clutch basket is flopping around on the main bearing. Your gonna need to remove the outer primary cover and inspect...

First thing to do is find the sound.
Get a long screwdriver and touch the tip to the primary and the right side cover of the transmission and put your ear to the other end of the screwdriver.
Precisely locating the source of the sound will go a long way to helping you fix it.

That said, hell it's just a sportster motor, just yank it and stick in another one.

I would agree with you but he claims just the slightest movement of the clutch handle stops the noise. That would be too light to stop noise from the clutch basket, would it not?

it would depend on how much slack he has on his cable the slightest bit of tension on to the clutch plates will push the basket out from the bearing.. in other words pick up the slack and give better ailment or support to the basket..

Haven't had a chance to dig in yet. Maybe this weekend.

The plan, such as it is, is to pull the outer primary and keep going until I find something. I don't think I'm going to have to get into the gearset, but one thing I'm a little worried about is that I had to replace the mainshaft when I installed the kicker. That involved pressing the old one out and the new one in, and I wonder if we over-stressed a bearing in the process.

We'll see.
