My 1994 FXSTC just started something similar. It seems to happen when I'm in gear and letting off the throttle to coast. I have only heard it in second, third, and fourth. It doesn't happen in fifth, and I didn't try it in first. I am also dealing with a leak in the primary, but I know there is lots of oil in it. I'm close to just putting on an open primary and tossing this thing in the trash. Is there anything I should be looking for if it doesn't happen in fifth? It sounds too far forward to be transmission, it seems to be coming from the front of the primary. At first it sounded like it was coming from the speedo, so I was thinking it was a stripped speedo cable, but the speedo and odometer never skipped, so I put my head down on the left side of the bike as far as I could while riding and it sounds like the front of the primary.

Have you checked your primary chain adjustment?

The above confusion is just one of many reasons to start a new thread for each problem.

Checked the chain tension today, it's right where it's supposed to be, just a shade over 1/2 inch. Didn't see anything out of the ordinary in there. I even dragged out the bore scope to see right up inside the primary, nothing out of place, and no odd wear.

Checked the belt tension today, it was pretty loose. I tightened it up, and no more noise. I hope you get yours figured out.
