I would at the minimum tesr it down to just the crank and the rods and see how that feels see how much end play you have in the rods as well as the crank and then go from there.. You might be looking at purchasing a new motor... An S&S 111 would be a nice upgrade.. I know THC is looking to sell his

Once you get the heads off and start removing the cylinders, make sure you put some rags to keep anything from falling into the bottom end. You could be looking at a wrist pin that has come loose and has scratched up the cylinder wall and gouged it out.
Had that happen to me going from Victoria back to Laredo on my shovel back around '82 or so. Looked like glitter coming out of the oil pump output line.
Never split the cases, but ran about two gallons of diesel sloshing it around and dumping it out. Ran it for another 20 years before actually splitting the cases when I stroked it to 93 inches and had no marks on any of the lower end components.

Just something to ponder..

My goal is to rebuild; no fun doing it any other way. Everyone has to blow up one engine right!? Do what I can, farm out work I can't, and then put her together.

There's something to be said for a careful, precision build. Meticulously balanced crank, hand matched rollers in the bearings, precision balanced and trued rods, etc. You'll end up with a better motor than ever came out of any factory.
