I agree, but it sounds like OP is on the fence...

Not my bike....I’ll let him decide what next to do. My opinion...split the case and flush.

He’s leaning keep on riding and changing oil much more frequently.

He’s got time to think about it

Alright.....we’re gonna split the case and flush out everything.

He’s going to get the heads redone.
He’s getting Jim’s lifters
He’s getting a EVL-5005 cam
Stock lifter block replacement
Reuse the stock push rods

That’s the plan....sound good?

I would advise to decrease the combustion chamber size to increase the comp for that 5005 cam.
It's a heavy bike so the higher comp will help the cam to come on a little sooner. And if he does shave the heads then he'll need adjustable pr's...

He is dead set on using the factory solid pushrods in his bike. He says he had one come lose years ago.

I believe he’s going to get a set of the SE heads and keep the original heads in storage for later use.

I’m thinking the factory pushrods aren’t going to work with the SE heads and EVL5005. He says they’ll work….I say they won’t work. Who’s right?

They will work but will be noisy.. Stock base circle is .530 and the 5005 base circle is .515 so he will loose that much on the stock preload of .100" which will put him at .085" preload. With that said it will be noisy especially because of the lift and faster ramping.. Will definitely need spring as well to accommodate.

I agree. Even with SE heads, which are getting scarce for the ones used without special pistons, out of the box they were only good up to about .525 lift and with that much cam, some things are going to have to be re-worked. Special or custom made solid push rods are the only thing that will work in the desired recipe.

The customer is always right - until they aren't... then they usually blame it on the shop.

Thanks everyone….customer is always right. I’ve got to remain friends….

There’s plenty of time before the upgrades he’s wanting. We’ve got to take care of the repairs and cleaning first.

Hopefully in the meantime, he’ll come to his senses about things. He might change his mind half a dozen times before it’s put back together again. I don’t know if he’ll even find SE heads for a price he’s willing to shell out.

Me personally….I’ve never had any issue with adjustable push rods.

Easy enough to use solid pushrods, just use adjustables first, adjust to the correct length, measure. Send the dimensions of the pushrods you need to Smith Brothers and they will custom make the one piece pushrods.

I`m also a fan of one piece pushrods. I had two adjustables come loose on my Evo, the first time no damage just a lot of clatter, the second time it cost me a lifter.
