I didn't think about it before, and for someone who might be doing a similar job,
by installing the pulley before the shift drum, the trans could be locked in two gears to tighten the big pulley nut,
I think the '90 FSM says to do it like that.

Don't like the looks of this 0maha. Hope you're still working on the bearing/seal bore of the inner... Pick up a 11150 lock ring from a dealer. That one does not look like a good fit. Might work, but it's a pain to change with the inner in place. Doable, but a pain...

I've always done it that way, even if I didn't need to pull the top cover...

I'm pretty sure it's fine, but I trust your opinion. I didn't get the inner back from Mark today, so I'll swing by the dealer and get the MoCo snap ring.

On unrelated business, we just got this new shop puppy. Cute little guy now, but mom's 80 lbs and dad is 110, so he's going to be a big boy.

I agree. The existing snap ring looks like it is too small or not seated properly.
Is that a golden? Got one. The only breed I trust around my nine grand kiddies. They just don't get pissed and nip a kid.

I think so. My daughter got him through some people she knows on Facebook. He does seem pretty chill for a puppy.

Ran down to the dealer and got the clip.

Defiance HD here in town. Glad I'm not new bike shopping these days. Their inventory is thin. Place was all but empty.

Forgot to mention this the other day: Had some dumb luck. In the middle of all this and for no particular reason, I reached over and put my hand on the oil filter. Turns out the mount that it screws into had worked it's way loose. Since I already had the starter out, tightening it up was a breeze. That would be a real pain otherwise. Put some red threadlocker on the bolt, just because it seemed like the right thing to do.

My guess is the trans quad seal is shot, but no way to tell from here.

Unless someone comes along with a better idea, seems to me the next course of action is to pull the inner primary and have a look.
It looks like it's been leaking for years.

Sorry about that! I've cleared my plate and am back at it.

Mostly back together now, but I have a question.

The clutch pack is stock 1990. I decided to pull it apart and give it a once over.

Everything looks fine. No scoring on the hub, or any othet signs of trouble.

My question is on the rivet plate. Are the two sides supposed to be tight against each other? If I hold one side, I can rotate the other just a tiny amount. Like maybe one thou at the edge. Maybe even less.

Other than that, it looks a-ok. All the rivets are present, etc.

Am I good to put this back together, or should I toss the rivet plate and replace it?
