There isn't one person in the Evo section that will say selling a new bike to own a Evo is crazy. Harley models are a personal choice and you really don't know what is right until riding one down the road getting to see it's characteristics or personality. Younger people at work buy new bikes because of cheap interest rates or mid range price bikes interested in stretched bags, stereo's, air rides, big wheels and gothic apes, I'll support their purchases but down deep knowing they will never feel the soul of a Harley.

Owned the same Evo RK for roughly 15 years and a real good chance it will go down with me or may go down on it but every time getting on the Evo RK, rough work week seems to be forgotten. Purchased a TC Roadglide hoping to get my wife on some longer runs together didn't work out and she finally gave up riding, still have the RG and ran the wheels off it while repainting the White Bike but the RG is a distant 2nd bike when the Evo RK owned the roads again.

To further answer the OP's question on buying a Evo RK crazy, real close to finishing up a Shovel FLT and clearly the ugliest bike Harley has ever built but wanted a FLT for a challenge plus wanted a Shovel, drove 8 hours one way to get it. Is this crazy? possible but the bike will have soul, it's mine and a extension of personality. Big picture to the OP, get the Evo RK, may have to do some work on it but you will understand the Heritage of a Harley, they can be a reliable machine with just some simple repairs.

All up to you. Getting caught up in a blast from the past is easy . But it never turns out as expected. Old RK is just that. A stripped down under preforming bar hopper . But if it fits your desire go for it.
I have a 1996 EVO FB I like the bike. It is slow under powered but a joy to ride. I would be on it right now but after 25 years header pipe cracked. Can't get one so it is in to be TIG welded. I can get aftermarket crappy drag pipes but I want what is on it. The bike will never leave here as long as I am alive.
M8 is the best bike I have owned in 50 years. On the seconded one now. M8 feels more like an EVO than anything else they came up with. Single Cam, low end torque.

I took the first step. I accepted a good offer on the M8. It will be gone soon. Then I can start looking for a Road King. No rush since I have the FXST. So I guess I am crazy. As far as evos being slower than the M8...that's ok! I do not need the power of the 114.

There are some Evo Road Kings out there faster than a 114 M8, bottom line is a 80" responds well to modifications, a basic proven formula of correct parts will be all you need to get the job done when the time comes. Have fun shopping.

Put a 96" stroker kit on that RK with the right cam and carb..........and eat 114's for lunch. Evo's don't have to be slow to still be reliable, fun, and have soul.
