Well I'm glad you found your noise... I personally never had an issue with the steel breathers from S&S... You might want to call them, I know I would..
Did you take pictures of the case where the breather gear goes and the breather, spacer and the cam chest cover where the spacer for the beather rides.. I would be very interested to see if any damage was done.. The only thing I can think of is, it possible you used the .030" over sized breather gear? Normally it wouldn't fit but who knows. I would measure the old one and new one to see if there is a difference.. S&S parts are probably the best after market products manufactured for our Harleys...

I did one picture after first disassemble.
When I assembling I didn't see any damage on cam case and it's cover.
On breather gear also not damaged, except it's gear.
On each tooth I noticed chips, they are not big, but they are. The engine generally only ran for 10-15 minutes.
Any knocking on the engine is not good and must be eliminated.
If I started to ride, most likely, the chips would become larger, the backlash would increase, and perhaps, as a result, the gear on breather could collapse, damaging the entire engine.

So you have had good luck with the S&S steel breathers Hotrod? I just recently bought a S&S steel breather for my bike, I've always used the plastic ones, but this thread has me rethinking putting a S&S steel one in it??

It easy to check if a breather gear do noise or not.
Put cam and breather gear into box, secure cam caver, then thru whole of tappet guide try rotate by you hand the breather gear. If it spins for a little it can produce noise like tic-tic.
OP, the bore does look good.. wondering if the gear was a little tight to the pinion and cam gear... Glad you found it and looks as if your good to go..
Mike131, to some it's all a preference.. The reason for me is that plastic can distort and also hold metal if something fails which can ruin the case. Sometimes you can bore them out, oversize .030" sometimes you can't.. Won't happen with a metal one... And with the way I build motors I really don't want to replace the case because of that . But that's just my opinion others will have theirs.. Talk to your local Indy.. The plastic has lasted a very long time in stock reliable motors...
Definitely not wanting to start a debate but I personally had a case taken out by a piece of piston pin clip and metal breather finding each other. Got a good deal on that bike for a reason apparently…. Case was able to be repaired but it was ugly. Might of happened with a plastic breather also but i don’t think so. For me the plastic is a sacrificial part in a bad situation. I have checked many plastic breathers while installing cams and they all looked good with good bores. Never really saw any gouging from metal imbedded in them though im sure it happens. I am just going by my own personal experiences.
Hey guys, can I jump in here and ask a question, please. I have the exact same noise on my bike as the OP, but mine is a 2000 Heritage Springer twin cam. I am guessing that twin cams do not have that "breather gear valve" assembly, correct?
