Default 1996 flht

I have officially entered the modern age.

Low miles; basic FLHT. Just about completely stock (my preference). Coming from the east coast. Should be here early March. Lost of gadgets to get used to. Have a buddy with a 90 that I help maintain so I've got a head start anyway.

Carb'd model, has a few chrome extras, natural finish on motor and tranny (I prefer that over the black), has an aftermarket radio that is not functioning properly (gives me the opportunity to check the massive amount of wiring therein). Also comes with a tour-pak that will be shelved until needed.

Intend to use the bike as my over the Rockies long haul bike.

Appreciate any input and thanks for the encouragement. I'm sure I'll have questions as I get used to the bike.

With all that said, I am looking for this (pic below).........anyone sitting on one they want to part with?........or can steer me to a source for one? The part# is in red........53405-87B. Looks like it first shows up in the 87 HD accessory catalog.

Want to be able to take the wife on rides when she has the time and do not want to have to put the tour-pak on so that she has back support.

My buddy had a '96 and we retrofitted the quick release docking system to his bike with a little effort. The parts were not direct bolt on but will work. There are a few threads on HDF by folks who have done it. It really cleans up the rear of the bike. Then you can pop on the backrest or tourpak when needed and ride it stripped down the rest of the time.

Start the search with "docking evo touring", you might change it up a little to find what you need.

Welcome to the 19th century.. lol..
seriously though congrats.. How many miles? Yeah the wiring is enough to span the Rockies.. Glad to hear it's carbed. Not a lot of issues with the later year Evo's. I would definitely check the cam position sensor for the brown goo and maybe change the fork oil.. I like 15 weight for a heavy bike.. Other than that, enjoy..

Congratulations, only 9 years away from her being eligible for AMCA events!!!!!!

A quick cam and carb change will make that bike pull really nice up the mountains. Some will say leave her stock, but it is such a simple upgrade and makes a HUGE difference.

I agree with others about the detachable hardware, they way to go. That and a smaller seat when riding around town and you have one styling Evo.

Take care of that fuel tank and speedometer. The tanks are '95-'96 specific and the speedo is '96-'99.

Those racks pop up on eBay occasionally. I snagged one a few years back. A lot of people removed that whole rack set up to give them RK rear ends.

Nice low mileage, bout 700 a year.. should treat you well.. How do the base cylinder gaskets looK?. I believe that was the first year for Deutch connectors.. If you ever need a new cam position sensor, Standard Motor Products makes a great replacement MC-SPA3 for $50.... Amazon has them..

Nice looking bagger.

Don't count the tour pack out until you've tried it out. I bought an 04 Electra Glide back in 06 and told the Missus the first thing I was going to do was pull the TP off the following weekend.
Well I rode it to work for a week and found out the TP was so handy it never did come off until I traded the bike in, and then I kept it and used it on the Road King I bought.
