Ending the dreaded dead spot pause when you push the starter button. What am I missing with my 1993 FLSTC? Here's what I've done so far over time.
New battery
New stator and voltage regulator
Rebuilt the starter solenoid.
New starter relay
New starter
New start button and kill switch
Separated, cleaned, greased and reconnected every wiring harness plug I can lay hands on
Still have the problem nine starts out of ten. WTF?
The dreaded click. That's the term I was searching for. I think I'll try the heavier gauge wire thing first then maybe the second relay if necessary. Thanks.
I had been having a sort of "low grunt"...then kick in and start on my '85 FXRS. New battery didn't resolve it. On a hunch...I disconnected the wires at the common ground on the frame. Cleaned and wire brushed the spot on the frame, and each ring terminal. Starts right up now....no "grunts". Quality of your ground connections is critical on these 12 volt systems.
I have installed an additional mass to the frame, a thicker cable for the solenoid and I have replaced the breaker with modern fuses direct to the battery, I have no more dead click (new relay and rebuild the selonoid too) in my 91 flhs
