I guess it might be an idea to replace the lifters then along with the pushrods just to be sure on my 127 Ultima as I was thinking of the Vthunder lifters since I have to replace the pushrods anyways. I have about 1200 miles on it and it had lifter noise since day one found some of the pushrods are bent and have a set of Vthunder pushrods ready to go in. Haven't had it over 3100 yet just breaking it in easy.
well... I put in a crane hi-4 ignition kit with coil, wires, single fire ign. ect ect. then A freind of mine (Scary) over on www.clubchoppers.com told me how to tune the super G. I did not know the new supers run a 3rd jet called the air bleed!!! stock is a 40 main jet ( for the air) so I went with 89 main 33 intermediate and a 52 air bleed and this thing runs like my stock road king 80' . smooth as silk lots of torque I still have not been above 3500 rpm. I have talked to several HD mechs and they all say that with the ultimas you have to warm them up real good before you start out on a ride. Exp. if you jump on it. Also the base gasket leak and pushrod bending is linked to cold riding and a heavy wrist while cold.or no oil during assembly. This is just what I have been told .. they said "rule of thumb if you can touch the barrell (front) and leave your hand there for any length of time its not ready to ride. That said dont let your bike idle on a hot day for 10 min. just take her easy, just like your old lady, you try jummping on her before she is warm and lubed up she is going to kick your ***.
i just pulled a ultima 113 apart this afternoon, lifter failed at 8000 miles, took the cam and lifter block with it.......... looks like its going back to ultima............. it ran great from day one, the owner loves it, makes that ultra run like a flash of lightning
I was the kid that was riding the bike when it happened. we pulled the motor out and shipped it back to ultima and there gonna give the owner a new motor under warranty. cant beat that now atleast they stand behind there ****!
was the lifter noise really loud when it failed? reason I ask, friends fatboy lost a lifter last summer and it sounded really bad and it sounded like it was all over the bike. I had to pull the pushrods and lifters to find it. the roller on the bottom of the front exhaust valve lifterwent to sh*t. just curious.I just want to be aware of any unusual noise. we hear all the horror storys about these engines after we buy them, never before. But, I am in and out of the local dealer about once a month, maybe more some months and there is always at least 20 + bikes waiting to get something fixed, whether it be a engine upgrade, rebuild or warranty work or just a service. If it has wheels or t*ts it will give you problems, trust me.
well it sounded the same big *** cam noisy valvetrain tick to it from the time i picked it up till the time it blew up. when it did blow i herd a loud snap and i shut it down and coasted it over but i also wear a helmet and the snap is the only thing out of the ordinary thing that i herd. there was metal all over the place from the filter to the oil pan so it must has been on its way out before the snap. but ill tell ya man that 113 ran like a raped ape
im considering getting a 127' ultima for my next bike im building only im gonna tear it apart and blueprint it and replace the cam(go with a smaller cam prolly arround 575 lift), lifters( jims big axle-like john said), and pushrods with 7/16 peices and go over the heads cause i herd they also have 2 peice valves in them and replace them with some bigger units but other than that everything in the motor looks top notch and you can beat it for the price
I don't get it here fellas, you buy an engine that comes apart prematurely
and you're ready to buy another one? There is a reason these motors are
much cheaper than others. Sub standard parts, poor qaulity control in build
process etc.. I never heard of warranty claims and failure rates like this with the
top motor procers such as S&S, TP, Patrick Racing and so on.
I realize that the low up front cost is appealling but your forgetting about the
backend cost of rebuiling or replacing. Sounds to me that some of the Ultima owners
are getting it in the backend
I remember when S& S started and like all the other brands you mentioned they had their teething problems. Ultima make a good engine, when they find a weak link they change it. They initially had problems with pistons, now the use Mehle pistons. Mehle pistons are used by many top NASCAR teams so I wouldn't call them sub-standard or poor quality. Some people think that low price equals poor quality, we tell them OK we can charge you $7,000-$10,000 for an Ultima if it will make you feel better all have decline and paid regular price and are very happy.
Could it be the same reason we buy a high dollar motorcycle, do an engine upgrade, change the handlebars, exhaust, seat, wheelsand paint. Change the floor boards/ pegs, cables, grips, consoles, and buy chrome sh*t that we really need from china and still smile and wave as we walk out the dealers front door with the condomstill hang out our a$$.....................

A: I don't buy shiat from the dealer, haven't been back since 2001 when I bought my Duece
use Indy shops and high quality aftermarket parts
B: What I do buy I research quite a bit and thus ain't replacing it prematurely, especially engine work
C: I can afford the best motors available, if not I'll choose to wait
