RE: Ultima 107"\\\\\\\\\\\\\\; motor on a 90 model Bagger
ORIGINAL: Classic Beast
I got a few more miles on the 127 \\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;last \\;\\\\\ \;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;time home \\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;and it's running sweet but still the valve train is noisy even with the Vthunder lifters and pushrods. Get home from Algeria next week. \\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;Any one with a 127 thats quiet as Ultima said it's noisy because of the cam profile and the stiff springs? \\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;

Ear plugs - best tuning aid known to man - been using them since the 1970s. Wear them on every long trip, even in the car, and every day on my long commute to work.
Your bike shop may have them (they do at long last here in the UK) or your local shooting shop.
Paco have a safe trip to Sturgis. \\;The pinging has been cured with a little timing adjustment. \\;I am doing 44mpg on the highway and between 34 and 38mpg in the city. \\;If i can keep my wrist out of it. \\;I have got 4500 miles on it so far.
RE: Ultima 107"\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\\\; motor on a 90 model Bagger
Hi \\;pistole,
(a) the performance difference between your 1XX inchers
(and above) motors , compared to stock ? Is it like night
and day ? Passing cars - fast / very fast ?
 \\;
A stock motor gives 40-50 bhp. My 89 inch stroker around 85 and my 107 (dynoed a few days ago) 103bhp and 102 ft lbs torque. Passing cars is rather easier now!
(b) should I go all-the-way , or just go a bit bigger ? Am
asking this cause am considering the S&\\;S Super
Sidewinder Plus (124" ) motor.
 \\;
How deep is your pocket? 1. An 89 stroker kit will go in, with hi-comp pistons, cam, carb etc and make 80-90 bhp. 2. If you have a 93 or later you can probably bore it as well, to give 106/107 inch. In both cases I would recommend using an engine builder. 3. A small large new engine may cost less than a really big one, depending on make. 4. An S&\\;S 124 is quite a bit more expensive than a 107, but this thread has given good feedback on Ultimas, which are less than both these.
 \\;
My local S&\\;S dealer has fitted 124s in a couple of dressers recently and doesn't like them - reckons they don't like running at slow engine speeds, so \\;be cautious \\;against going too big.
 \\;
One contributor here has a 155 inch, which might undo all \\;my previous points!
(c) any views about that particular engine and S&\\;S in
general ? Am very impressed that they bench-test their
engines before shipping them out.
 \\;
I have just had a V107T installed in my FLHS. It goes like a rocket but vibrates far too much for my liking. With a couple of k miles up I hesitate to recommend it. My 89 inch stroker motor was far nicer to ride.
(d) is installing a "drop-in" engine , diy , difficult ? I do all
my own maintenance work and usually suffer more from
a lack of imperial tools rather than lack of knowledge.
I had an S&\\;S dealer do mine, partly to protect my 3 years warranty, but also I dont have the tools and expertise. You will get advice that way on other things that need doing, eg I have a heavy duty Barnett spring on my original clutch, rather than a complete new clutch, but a new primary chain.
Jireh has been mentioned and I tried several times (from the UK) to get a price for shipping an Ultima from them. They kept making promises and not keeping them, so I gave up.
Keep us up to date on your thoughts and purchases!

Hi Goat,
 \\;
I wish I could say my cup of joy runs over! This thing goes like a rocket, but vibrates far too much and isnt getting any better yet. So I am disappointed with it. My old 89 inch was like a steam engine, smooth and effortless. All I wanted from my 107 was more of the same, but it seems I was dreaming.
 \\;
The things that have transformed the bike are a TrueTrack Trackula kit (for rubber mount owners), Fournales rear air shocks and an M6 primary tensioner. Now I can recommend each of them without reservation.
 \\;
So I am enjoying much improved riding quality on the one hand, but with a pretty awful motor on the other.
 \\;
This thing had better get better before too long....
My experiance with an S&\\;S 110 motor is about the same as yours, I found the 127 ultima to be a lot smoother starts, runs and idles better. A few other observations the S&\\;S motor would puke oil untill I installed the Reed valve and it always had a problem with pinging that I never did solve. The only issue I had with the Ultima 127 was the valve train noise that seems to be getting better as I have about 8000 on it now. I could say I was never totally happy with the S&\\;S motor. Some of the reasons I went with the Ultima 127 instead of the 124 S&\\;S is the 127 is 4.25 bore 4.5 stroke, 1.67 crank pin and .927 wrist pin. The 124 is 4 1/8 bore 4 5/8 stroke 1.5 Crank pin and .792 wrist pin. I think the 120 Ultima motor would be the best one as it is 4.25 bore and just over 4 inch stroke so you would get the maximum durability from this motor besides they designed it for the heavier bikes. I know S&\\;S makes good stuff and have been using them since the 70's with my 84" stroker then 96" stroker and many other engines over the years both for myself and customers. This has been my personal experiance and others may have a different opinion.
made it to lil sturgis and back, 1000 mi. no issues, but ignition module. motor run strong. i will post more when the forum is back to normal.
