the 107 just done an 800 mile trip to the beach, Thunder Beach in PCB, Florida. Ever since i went to Little Sturgis the timing seems to be off. I lost the ignition on that trip and had it replaced. it has pinged under load ever since. i tried retarding the timing a little but that didn't help. I was going to have it dynoed at the beach, but after talking to the dyno guy i figured it would be an expensive waste of time and money. I have a ignition that Jerih replaced the defective one that has different part numbers. Jerih said it was programed for the 107. i am going to try it this afternoon. Any more suggestions on the excessive pinging under load would be appreciated. I know the chitty gas and the bike loaded down and maybe the wrong timing curves has something to do with my problem. "timing curves" an expression i do not understand. help !
I had the same issue when my ignition quit. I put in the Crane HI4 ignition which gives you the ability to adjust the curves. I have gotten rid of the pinging and the bike runs good. I am happy with the Crane igniton and it was a decent price. I think when you put the replaced ignition in, the motor will go back to the way it was. I put a 2 into 1 on it and had to rejet due to large flames coming out the back on decel. Cool weather up here in Maine and the bike is running awesome.
Damn Paco, my military assignment has me in Panama City for the next 5. I was at Thunder Beach. Probably saw you and didn't know it. I was hanging out by the Sandpiper and made it out to Coyote Ugly. Good times. Good luck with the bike...Will
I just came back from a 1500 trip and had a similar experiance my 127 was pinging on the hills but not all the time, some days it was great so I backed off the timing in the parking lot which helped. Once I got home and ran a tank of 94 through it everything seemed to be back to normal and it's running great again. I have a HI4 ignition at home I am going to try in it but won't be home till the end of Oct. An ignition curve is in most of the ignitions a fairly straight line from idle to the maximum advance that is set. On a stock bike with lower compression the more advance you have and the earlier it comes on you notice it running better with more power usually 35 at about 3000 RPM. On a higher compression motor It won't take as much advance so about 30 BTDC and at about 3500 to 4000 RPM for full advance. When you get into the larger High compression motors with 4" bore or larger you want to limit your advance from 22 - 28 and sometimes as high as 4500 rpm. There are many other factors that influence ignition timing, a lean mixture will cause it to ping a hot motor, the design of the combustion chamber if you have more quench area it causes more turbulance which helps the fuel mixture so less pinging. Longer rods help reduce it keeping the stroke the same. Some of the more advanced ignitions have sensor feedback, engine temp, knock sensor manifold density, throttle position, altitude to name a few, this helps the ignition adjust the advance curve due to conditions. With the ignitions in our engines there is only one input and thats RPM. If you have a VOES switch that is another input but it's only an on off switch and really should be a Map sensor which is an analog output and can vary the settings. Hope this explanation helps a bit. I run a RB Air Fuel Ratio meter so it shows me in real time the mixture as when I go to the coast it can get quite lean so I have to put in a larger main jet or it pings like crazy.
Glad to hear that your bike is doing good. weather here in alabama is great right now. gas in my area is limited to 87 octane, which is a farse. i have used several bottles octane boost lately.
Will,
i was by Coyote Ugly several times over the 3 days i was there. Even down by Sandpiper several times. i guess we should have mentioned we were going on the forum and desinated a place to meet.
Beast, thanks for the explanition. i will try the other ignition today and see if the curve is different.
Let us know as until recently the Ultima ignition seems to be doing a good job for me until I got my new pressure washer. The other thing I forgot to mention is you can try the colder plugs as this helps I was using the Champion 9's then switched to the NGK I think the 6es which were even better. I have a set of the new S&S lifters coming and will try them to see if their quieter than the Vthunders. Other than that I think now that I'm used to it anything less than the 127 would be boring, it makes a wonderful wail at about 4000 Rpm with that RB pipe sorta like singing to me.
I know the 127 is awesome in the torgue and hp departments. at times i wish i had have bought one. then times like this weekend in traffic i wondered how a bigger motor would be, because my 107 really don't like traffic. give her the open road and she sings also
When I first ordered the full polished engine I thought maybe it was a mistake as I was worried about heat especially with the 127. I already had the oil cooler from my last engine so I thought if I had to I could install 2 of them. I must say I only turned on the oil cooler 3 times I have a manual valve on it. The max temp it has seen is about 210 I usually turn on the cooler when it's just over the 200 mark. Been in traffic many times on really hot days and it doesn't seem to be an issue, never had it run on when shutting it off the only thing with the 4.25 bore is on the inside of your right leg it's closer so you feel it sometimes.
I replaced the ignition that Moons cycle repair installed in Little Sturgis with the ignition that Jerih sent programmed for the 107". It seems to do better in the pinging department. of coarse, i was on my way to work, not loaded for a weekend or two up, just me. weather was about 60 degrees, not 88-90 degrees. full tank of supposely "premium" fuel. This afternoons temps should be in the high 70s. we will see.
Beast,
i have a friend with 80" evo on a "Red Horse" motorcycle. He rode with me to Florida over the weekend. My girlfriend, me and wkend load on my 107" ultra got about the same gas mileage as my friends 80" riding solo. mileage was close.
