MP,

thanks for the heads up on the ebay. i checked, i guess somebody bought the one you saw. i have been watching ebay since i bought the bike but have been outbid on every inner fairing. if it wasn't some much trouble and so expensive i would go with a 96 +. there are plenty of them on there.

Will,
have you got it cranked yet ?

later..............

No, not cranking yet. Waiting for the new starter and oil cooler to install. Should be fired up this week...

Update for anyone that is interested, why you would be I don't know. Anyway, the starter arrived today and it DOES NOT FIT. Even though midwest said it would. Too long of a body, hits the frame. So I ordered one off eBay tonight and it should be here next week. 1.8 kw that specifically lists the 97 Ultra Classic as a model it fits. So waiting game again. Another question for everyone, and anyone that has an answer. The coils lists among all its wiring in the Ultima manual as needed a 12V+ constant wired to the middle post along with the white wire from the iginition. Am I reading that correct? Do I need to wire up a 12+ from the battery to the middle post of the coil? Thanks guys. I was pretty depressed today as I thought I would get a chance to here it run...

No the white wire is the 12volts you need. If you run a wire from the battery you won't be able to shut the motor down. You may need to space the oil filler even with the 1.8KW. Be sure to check the clearance between the carb and the bottom of the tank.

so when I look at the wiring diagram from ultima, and it has the white from the ignition to the center post of the coil, that is the only wire that needs to go to the center post, or is there another that needs to go to it as well. I do have the spacer for the oil spout. The 2.0 was hitting the frame. Thanks a bunch John...

By the way John, do you have an online sales website. If so, I want to throw some $ your way and order some stuff from you as a thank you for your knowledge. Also, it appears that you have served or are serving. Thanks for that, and what years were you or have you been in. Take care...Will

I thought I would need a 1.8 or better starter but so far the cheaper Ultima 1.4 starter seems to work OK. I had to learn to use the decompression switch more often and not crank as long. I replaced the Mikuni choke cable, just did not like the on-off way it worked, prefer the cv cable and the way you can set it at various positions.

On the EFI, you take the wire that goes to the fuel pump and put that to the center post on the coil. That gets it done...

Starter is in. The oil filler spout needs to be ground down slightly. This is with the extension on there. Just barely hits it. I have to go to the base for the next couple of days, but it should be fired up early next week or Sat. Taking a while as we are selling our house at the same time...

No online site, we stay busy enough as it is now. I assume you are using one single fire coil. You have a white wire that went to the original coil, this is switched 12V power from the ignition. That goes to the center post of your coil along with the white wire from the ignition in the nose cone. The blue wire goes to the fromt coil, the pink wire goes to the rear. The green wire gets hooked to the original pink wire for the tach. the violet wire is for the VOES, we adjust the VOES switch to 7 inches of mercury for most heavy bikes. That will minimize your chances of pinging under low vacum/heavy load conditions.
I enlisted in the Army Airborne in 1966, served in VN 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, and in Chad in 1970 and 1971. After gettin out in 1972 I went into the NY National Guard and retired in Feb 2008. After getting out in 1972 I worked construction until 1975 when I was hired by the City of Albany Fire Department, which I retired from in April 2008. Life is good, we have more than enough work to keep the shop busy and both my family and I have our health.
