replacing the sprocket shaft seal does not look straight forward. Is this going to require splitting the cases?

I think it's time you got the Factory Service Manual for your bike.. It is if you've done them or have a manual...

Easy job, should be a you tube video on it somewhere and you can fast forward to the interesting part.

Look up “ Harley PDF manual trade and share” on FB, hit files and find your manual, save to computer.

I have the Factory Service Manual and I just read that to replace that seal requires cracking the case. Well, this IS my first rodeo, and I am going for the ride.

You "DO NOT" have to crack the cases to replace the sprocket shaft seal.

This is why I occasionally rant about "Buy the manual" posts being of no value to the forum...there is real knowledge here, the manual is all about a full rebuild, not occasional repairs.

Okay, how do I go about it? Is there some special tool required? I do not see how it detaches. I am fine with not cracking the case but will if necessary.

They have seal pulling tools. Usually have a small hook like, to pry out the seal. Or you can use you imagination and a small slide hammer that is made to pull seals.. Google can be helpful...

I am always hesitant to force something. After looking at this and poking it a bit, I realized that the metal spacer was enclosed in the rubber seal. So I was able to pull/mangle it out without damaging anything else. No cracking the cases. An aside, I may have found a 12 ton press for $75 which I will see tomorrow morning.
