Well, just to get us back on track...
The bike is running very well but the gas guage doesn't work. Hasn't since I got it running. Any suggestions on getting it back? I wonder if the float in the tank is shot after sitting in bad fuel for years?
I guess we dont know if it worked before you disturbed it? I havent done a Harley fuel gauge yet, but most older vehicle fuel gauges can be tested by disconnecting the wire to your sender. It should read either empty or full. Then touch that wire to ground and you should get the opposite reading. If this works, your wiring and gauge should be okay and your sender bad. If it doesnt work, you probably have a wiring or gauge issue. Others with Harley experience will likely chime in soon (and perhaps tell me I dont know how Harleys work).

If it sat in bad fuel for a long time it may be gummed up and sticky.
