I’ve got a 96 FXD, currently running an ev27 in. I got a killer deal on a set of .020 over jugs with 10:1 pistons. And figured while I’m tearing it down anyway, I might as well throw in a bigger cam and springs if the heads are off. My question is, can I run a spring kit to accommodate the lift of something like the DM580 cam without having to modify the heads to fit the springs? I’m trying to learn how much I can do on my own. But any guidance is appreciated.
Spring kits called Beehives is what works, many different brands can accommodate 585 to 625 lift, check the specs.
The DM580 your talking about is a great cam for the compression your running, if you can get your hands on a DM580 don't hesitate.
Not trying to steal this thread, and hopefully my question benefits the OP as well as my own curiosity: I see "beehives" recommended often. Is there ever an application where they should not be used? Not talking about highly modified drag bike or unusual situations, just everyday commonplace bikes with various and typical engine mods that you see here on the forum. Thanks.

It's the installed height that you have to check. Some fit. Some need a little more room.
If the heads have ever had any work done you should be fine. Just a valve job is enough to give you that little extra that you might need.
Beehives have come a long way & can be used on any street driven bike. They come in .650 lift which covers just about every cam you would use.
A race bike with .700 + lift would need more spring.

Wouldn't that valve job require cutting the valve guides down or the collar squashes the valve seals?
