Default 1997 Heritage Springer Softail - Rebuild Expensive?? $$$$$

I found a very nice showroom condition 1997 Heritage Springer Softail with about 36K miles on it - original owner and it's flawless. Looks literally brand new and he's asking 10,300 for it.

I was told that EVO's can be VERY expensive to rebuild - true of false? I am mechanically inclined, but have never tackled a Harley rebuild..

What do you think about the price?

Any ideas?

Kevin

At 36K, there's not much to have to rebuild, unless he burned valves due to poor tuning, didn't service it regularilly, or it has jug base gasket leaks or other leaking seals and gaskets....

It costs, really no more, IMHO, then rebuilding any other Harley motor. As a matter of fact, it hasone less cam than the twin cams, and a few less bearings, making it cheaper than a newer engine.

If the bike is as nice as it sounds, it should be good for another 36K with out a rebuild.

unless you want serious HP you got another 50K plus miles before you need to rebuild anything. the price is right too. too bad it is the white and red springer.... not my favorite, but you can always paint.

Evo's will go 70-80K easy with no work, assuming they have been taken care of. Then you only need to do the top, unless you are having problems somewhere else, or want to go faster. The cost of it depends on how much of the work you can do yourself, parts prices, etc. I do all of my own machine work, so all it costs me is parts basically. If he is "asking" 10,300, I'd offer him 9and go from there. That said, it is a good bike, one of the best Evos they made, would be a great ride. Let us know what you do. JMHO,YMMV, etc.

I have a 99 Heritage with 93K on it and I haven't done anything yet to the engine. It is still running strong. I will probably do a top end rebuild and new lifters at 100K. Theprice from my local independent machanic was around $800 for that. I'd say that's not to bad for 100K miles!.

The price is way to high, IMO. I'd give no more than about 8500 bucks for it if I really wanted it.

I think it depends on you. Do you like the bike? springers are kinda cool. price is a little high for a bike that has been taken care of.If you spend much less you get into the "beater" class.I did'nt buy a 96 heritage because the guy would'nt take 9k he had alot of aftermarket crap that just did'nt match up, NICE bikeabout the same mileage. DO NOT BE AFRAID of the EVO as far as durability and cost to maintain. they are IMO as good as the twin cam. I doubt you will have to touch it for at least another 30,000 mi. I would offer less(making a big deal about the HIGH mileage)but don't be suprised if the guy says no. I just bought a 97 ultra w/9500 mi. for $9700 with all maintenance records, owners manuals, original receipt etc.so maybe that helps you some.
On the other hand I sold my 1991 2 yrs ago for 12k w/64,000mi. it was a nice bike and I got rid of it at the right time apparently. but in the end the guy who bought it was happy.
I think a bike is very personal and the end result is a matter of how much you like the bike? Will you be happy with it?

There are lots of after market parts for the evo so in a lot of ways it can be cheaper, only thing that really kills a harley engine is lugging it or detonation, running it hard is much easier on it than lugging or idling too much. Keep it clean change oil often keep the bolts tight and your grandchildren can use it.

Offer em' a little less, and see what he'll come down too. Negotiate.
