EVO rebuild
I am new to this Forum and hoping you guys can help me out-
Just bought a 96 wide glide and she uses some oil. Only 20k on the clock. After I got the bike I found evidence of the bike being layed down (starved cylinders?).
I was thinking this winter I would put in a torrington bearing for the cam and fresh'n up the top end.
I then started thinking I might as well put an EV27 cam in it and SE heads with new lifters. I dont want to loose reliability and I prefer not to take a hard hit on MPG.
I am the kind of guy that doesnt let things go and wait for something to happen. I like to keep everything tight and reliable.From what I have gathered,an EV27 cam is proven as the way to go.
Any guidance you could give me would be deeply appreciated. Thanks!

The stock 18523-86B lifters are pretty popular on another forum and I got them from www.discountbiker.com for about $22 each ( plus actual shipping) last winter.They recommend you change them every 20-30 thousand miles. The cheapest place I could find for a EV27 was JIREH Cycles, I think it was about $110. I am using Rev-Tec adjustable Chromoly pushrods, but they are not as easy to find as more popular brands such as Andrews.

I had my stock heads shaved .060, re-did the valves and seats, added a Spyke electronic ignition that eliminates the stock components (including the rev limiter) and installed the Wood 6 grind cam along with the Torrington bearing, new late model HD lifters and adjustable pushrods, updated to a CV carb with Wood needle, and a free flowing air cleaner. If you're thinking EV27, take a look at the Wood 6. It's comparable, and according to my indy mechanic, has better performance specs. The combination of the above really woke up my stock 89 motor. And this is an Ultra, a pretty heavy machine, especially two-up.
In your case, being a 96, you won't have the same carb and lifter issues as my 89, as you've already got the stuff I updated to.

hello, keep your heads and have them worked over . take the time and call bob wood , he is the man and of all my harleys he hit the hp/t within 2 of each . i have a 96 badboy with 38000 miles . i called him and he said send the heads to sam's performance , i did . i put his w-6 bolt in cam , thunder header ,weisco 10.5 pistons and ended up with 83 hp and 90 t . it starts with 80 t @ 2200 rpm and doesn't drop back to 80 until 5700 rpm . the dyno was speed's performance plus . next is a w-9 , he said low 90's hp but 100 + torque , give him a call .

I didn't have any headwork done. There is a noticeable difference in power, not a huge difference, but it still feels like a different engine. Sounds a little different (better) too. I had to adjust the idle up a little because it idled so low, I couldn't keep it running at stop lights unless I gassed it, even after it was warmed up.
Too bad I only got to ride it for a week with the new cam when my alternator burned up (unrelated issue), so now I'm waiting for that to get fixed before I can enjoy it again. This has been a very frustrating summer for me, driving my cage in the beautiful weather.

Have to admit that I don't keep track; probably should. I would guess that it's somewhere around 40 - 45 or so.
