I have an oil leak where the satarter enters the case, I have replaced the o-ring and have had someone else give it a try, but it still leaks. So I thought I would try asking if anyone else has had this problem and how did you fix it.
It is noticable after riding it, once the bike is set on the kick stand, a small stream of oil runs down the side of the primary case and you can tell it is coming from the area around the starter.
sqdealgeorge, I am sure it is coming from around the starter area, I am not sure how much primary oil is in there, I had a local guy who works out of his garage do some work on the bike, he replaced the primary gasket, along with some other items. Would over filling the primary case cause a leak in that area, I have thought about that, and thought about draining the primary case and putting in one quart of primary oil.
I think I am going to drain the primary, pour in 1 qt. of primary oil, take the starter off and check the o-ring, maybe I will get lucky. I was wondering about pressure building up, is there a vent in the primary case somewhere?
The amount of oil in the primary has nothing to do with it. The o-ring on the starter housing is to keep dust/water out of the idler (gear reduction) assembly.
I don't have the parts book for that year and not exactly sure how the housings mate, but there is at least one seal, possibly 2 where the starter shaft enters the inner primary housing. You'll have to remove the inner primary and you should replace all the seals as well as the inner primary bearing race (on the trans input shaft) and the inner primary bearing. Those 2 items (bearing/race) will add 40.00 to the cost of the job. Seals (at least 2) will be about 18.00, plus the o-ring where the engine meets the housing, and 24.00 for outer primary gasket or 14.00 aftermarket price.
Takes a special puller/installer for that race on the trans input shaft, the rest can be done with fairly common hand tools.
The primary vents thru the transmission via the push rod that releases the clutch.
