Those of us with ancient bikes can select neutral by toeing down from second gear.
And recent ones too, but those of us in the middle can only get a 'real neutral from first!
Greg,
Been following your tale with interested and pleased you put your 'finger' on the problem! Well done for solving it, but don't ask for too much sympathy - we have nothing like 80 degrees here yet!

Thanks, Its nice to know what it was, just not sure how I missed it...
Yea, I guess it could be worse...... Dont care much for temps over 75 or so, but its much easier to ride in than the 20s and 30s.... Cant really complain... Maybe someday I can make that trip across the pond again and enjoy the scenery... I did spend a little time in London on a lay-over many years ago, but didnt get to see much more than fog and city streets..
By changine the bend on the cable housing, it effectively changes the length of the cable and clutch control...
I thought about just letting it ride and not telling anyone.. But, it can easily happen to anyone and thought I'd take my lumps in hopes to keep someone else from spending money if they dont have to.. Love my new clutch, but didnt need the new one.. Thanks for the help guys...
Thanks for fessing up That is amazing the cable is that sensitive. I think my manual says to disconnect it from where it is secured when adjusting it but I never do that. I know my throttle cables are to be adjusted with the tire pointed straight and then pointed to the far right so they must be sensitive too. My speedo cable has a nasty bend in it because my oil-cooler is in the way...I can hear it whinning sometimes because that bend must make a dry spot. But it sounds like the clutch cable is probably the most senesitive after hearing your experience.

To give you an idea, pull the clutch in and push and pull on the cable. You should be able to feel the difference in the lever. Possibly the thickness of the housing adding to the sensitivity..
Look at the new clutch like preventative medicine. Now you will never have to give a single thought to possibilities of the center spring plate grenading and ruining a perfectly good day.

Thanks for the valuable experiences. I have an Energy One extra plate clutch installed in my 93 FXR. The adjustments are very critical far as the engagement point goes as you guys have seen. Even though I have a high performance engine, I think a stock HD clutch with the extra steels and friction plate to eliminate the riveted plate would give me an earlier engagement point.
Either I missed it, or you guys have not talked about the stack height of the clutch pack. My E-One is set at 1.250. What experiences can we discuss about this issue??

Wish I could help Buddy. I'm not familiar with the E-One, or the adjstment for it.. Mime was pretty straight forward. I added the new plates, minus the spring plate, and adjusted it per the manual. I didnt have to measure the stack hight. I suspect you have the "older" style clutch basket that t150vej was talking about in another thread. Since they've been active in this thread, they might reply with some good avice (contrary to what I can offer on your clutch)..
Nope, she's a 93 and the only difference is your new pack is a Barnett extra plate and mine's an Energy One. Dean the owner of E-One worked at Barnett for years prior to starting his own business and has been very helpful. Seems like the aftermarket extra plate clutches have a tendency to engage late. Just trying to get some input on how to eliminate this as I've tried most of the methods advised and it still engages late.
I gave up on getting my Energy One extra plate kit to engage as early as the stock clutch, but if you find a way to adjust it to work like the stock clutch , please post your methods.
