Default Regulator for 92 FXR?

Ok, so I have a 92 FXR and I had a connection problem a few weeks ago, thanks to this discussion forum, I was able to fix it. Now, after a good ride for an hour or so, it stops charging. Cools down, and you can jump it and it will start charging again. A buddy told me that it was because the regulator was going bad and when it does it will shut down when it gets hot. Once cooled, it begins to work. Is this something that could be happening? If so, how tough is it to fix it? Any thoughts?

Did you replace the stator or just try to fix the female prong that comes out of the left case ?

I replaced the stator. Now that's the box with the small fins on the front of the frame, correct? Gotta work with me here, not too familiar with all the parts.

No. What you replaced is the regulator.

The stator is inside the primary. One of the easiest way to check it out is to take one of the covers off of the primary and sniff. A burnt out stator will have an odor you wont forget, it smells like burnt eggs. If the stator just has an open circuit you wont smell anything. Hope this helps. Be sure to check the wiring on the regulator to ensure that you do not have a short in it.

After the electrical checks, make sure that your regulator has a good ground. I had an intermittent charging problem that took 2 hours to figure out and 15 minutes to fix. All it needed was just another ground wire from the regulator to the frame.
