Don't know if I've got the right forum here but was wondering if anyone out there could advise me. I've got an 87' FXR which is generally a happy, rolling bag of bones but these days it's taken to cracking and popping, misfiring when riding, it's fine when idling and starting up but ride away and the fireworks begin. I checked the battery with the ignition off, it's about 12.65 volts, when ticking over (on choke at least) it shows about 14.7 volts so I think it's charging. I was going to change the regulator but something's telling me that isn't it, I replaced that a few years ago. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Cheers.
i fixed this on my chicks 84 fxr yesterday.
one of the white wires going to the coil had pulled most of the way out of its eyelet end.
I hate crimped wires they are guaranteed to fail sooner or later.
soldered all the connections.
I thought it was fuel problem cable adjustment fuel filter didnt suspect electrical till I pulled the plug and noticed bad plug wires and kept on a going. fixed everything no more sputtering popping etc. you can really tell its the problem if you wiggle the wires while your riding it will immediately cut out on you. hope this helps.
Thanks guys, much appreciated. The'fireworks' is kind of what it sounds like as I was riding along, the popping and the misfire. Respect for tomorrows anniversary.
I'm rebuilding an 87 FXRL right now and anything that old is going to have problems with the electrical and seals etc... especially if it has been sitting for any length of time during it's lifetime. I really feel your pain. The old owner of mine a supposed "great mechanic", used wire nuts on the wiring and used 4 pieces of aluminum angle to support the air cleaner.
Go over it section by section and look for any wiring that's loose or frayed and check the condition of the intake seals.
