Appreciation to both of you. I just had a PM from GRBrown complaining about the dark and cold too.

Ha. We're all 'biker inuits' trapped in our igloos till Spring thaws whittling away at our rides now ... tell me about it. I've finally resigned myself to the fact it's a complete winter rebuild, and not just a weekend's work too.

graham:

can you tell me what size spacers you used (specifically left side) to get that 150mm of yours centered?

right now, with the OEM *small spacer on the right, with the brake caliper fitted (need the small spacer, or at least one small(er) spacer to make the caliper clear the right side bearing)....my 150mm avon is hugging the left side of the fender. thats fine and dandy with just the weight of the bike (progressive 444 shocks), but once I load it, she's gonna rub.

damn, i was hoping this would be easy

and yes, the sprocket/chain hits the tire. need ~ 1/4" spacer under the sprocket to have it clear the tire, and that 1/4" (actually about 5/16") is about how far I need that wheel to come to the right)

by my measurements, I need a 1 3/4" spacer on the left, and a 1 3/8" spacer on the right, now subtract 1 3/16" from the right for the caliper boss, and that leaves me with a 3/16" spacer. never seen one that small. plus, the bolts on the rotor protrude 1/8" (leaves me ~ 1/16" clearance between the rotor bolts and the caliper "leg"

this is assuming the tire is PERFECTLY centered in the fender

*edit, pics added

I didn't use any spacers, mine worked out fine without any. Sorry I can't help any more!

As for using a spacer behind the pulley, measure the clearance you currently have between the edge of the pulley and where it comes closest to the swingarm. I suggest you use a spacer no more than half that distance. As I found, while trying to get my 150 in with a 1 1/2" belt, there is a limit of the thickness of spacer that will go in!

Who made your chain conversion? Zipper?

Sticking with a belt and pulley, it seems the magic number for a 70T 1 1/8" Touring rear pulley is 40217-04, taken off the 2004 models.

Later ones go down to 66T or 64T for markets like Japan.
From 2004-2006 All Touring Bikes Came With:
Rear Wheel Sprocket 1 1/8” W X 70T . . . . HD Part#: 40217-04 . . . . . . .STAMPED: 40117-00
Secondary Belt 1 1/8” W X 139T . . . . . . . HD Part#: 40024-04B
5 Bolts 7/16” X 2 1/4” X 14 . . . . . . . . . . HD Part#: 3737A
There talk of using 70T Softail pulley cast 40306-00, here, but it says they require .157 machining off them to fit.

Going for a 1" belt and pulley, I have not worked out yet ...

I have however read of individuals using a 2000-2003 1 1/2" pulley, removing the retaining ring and machining it down to 1 1.4" successfully.

This does not apply to older, Evo bikes as the center hole diameter is smaller.

my conversion wasn't a "kit" per se.

EK ZZZ 530 chain
Jims (i think) 1/2" offset front sprocket, 24T
PBI 50T rear sprocket (aluminum)

at this point, I've gotta get the 1/4" spacer under the sprocket *first* then I can start messing around with wheel spacers (i dont have any "wiggle" room left to right like someone with a belt might on the front pulley. I have to be exact.)
