You have The Dreaded Click. Many things to check, many causes. We really need a sticky for this. Search for "The Dreaded Click" for lots of suggestions, but: Charge battery fully first and make sure the battery is good. Check/clean batt cables, including ground. Check the voltage at the solenoid when you are cranking, in and out terminals. Should be about the same and should be about the same as at the battery when cranking. Try jumping the small terminal to the large terminal from the battery (while trying to start) and see if that does it. Buy a push button solenoid cover.

Also check your starter relay, its mounted on your oil tank. I see people talking about the push button end caps but have never seen them for an 88, anybody have a link?

Hopefully it was only a battery outlived it's good... but since you're already in the electrical mode - test your stator and make sure a weak or defective charging system was not the culprit of the battery being bad.

The ever increasingly popular "push button" for the starters is only for '89-up. Pre-89 starting systems are a totally different animal....
