Baker Tranny & Starter Mod
I have an '87 Sloptail. It was a Heritage, but is pretty much stripped down now. I had a tranny problem and decided to grab a Baker DD5 with an N1 drum as I run a suicide and jockey. The Baker fit right in, but the starter ear is essentially for a later type starter. The old style will fit, but requires a little modification on the starter gear case. I had to cut a notch out of the bottom where it mates to the tranny case ear to allow the starter to mount flush. Of course I had to figure this out the hard way - I broke one of the mounting bolt ears on the starter gear case when I didn't notice it wasn't flush with the tranny and cranked down on the mounting bolt.

We've done several Aftermarket trannies and on some of the ones for the early EVO's we've had to do grinding for clearance. Be sure to check the outer side away from where the starter bolts on as there can be clearance issues there between the end of the starter and the tranny. The starter should fit rifgt in and have at least .060" clearance all around. Hope this helps.
