Default Glad I tore it down!

Pulled the Evo apart today on my 88 FLHTC. 50,000 miles on the clock & it started loosing power last fall. not a lot but enough that I noticed.
I pulled the front head off & there is a strait cut in the gasket that goes through the dowel hole. I thought that was a lil' wierd!
so I pulled the rear head which felt like it was torqued down tighter than the front & when I got it off, I found a blast hole in the head gasket pointing towards the carb area. It is around 1/2 inch wide which would explain the 117 pound compression test!
The barrels look awesome, no ring ridge & a mirror surface. The pistons both look brand new, no scuffing etc. Base gaskets were leaking, both head gaskets, 1 exhaust gasket & now I get to bead blast all my parts!
Not too painful cash wise so far so Im gona go for an EV-27 while I'm into it.
Can't wait till spring but at least I'm havin' fun all winter!
Hatch.

Did you notice alot of oil consumption or anything other than just the power loss? Pic's would be cool if you've got 'em. Its always cool when theings look better than you expected (on the monetary end). That way you can afford to throw a little fun at the project..

Hatch, check where the cylinder studs go into the block visually and by putting a straight edge over the area to ensure that the studs weren't starting to pull out of the block. No sense in putting it back together, only to have it happen again!!!!

If those cyl studs were never upgraded I would do so I think the latest P/N for the new style studs is 16837-85C These studs have a flange at the bottom that when you screw them into the cases the flange will tighten to the proper length

I went through stud problem last riding season, it should have been evident when I found one head torqued tighter than the other. I ended up putting time-serts in the cases and this was only after I replaced all the studs with new ones and 3 of them pulled the threads right out.

Hatch, I've seen cuts like that from blown gaskets, but they were usua;;y a little "V" shaped. Is the metal ring discolored/burnt looking there??? It looks like you have a set of Canadian Jump wings on!!!! I got mine in early '70 when we did a little training with the boys. Great time partied a lot so some of it is a little "Fuzzy"!!!!LOL

Ya, good times.................except for night jumps with full gear!.
The ring isn't discolored on the gasket but the surface of the head looks like it is. really weird, thought some numpty cut it on purpose.

The hot combustion gases can act like a torch. I saw a few cylinders/heads that actually had a groove cut in them from it.
