I would like some advice regarding the charging system on my 1994 dyna, the standard charging system although it does work, unfortunately for me not very well over short rides the charging system struggles to top the battery up.
I gather that this is not uncommon as the standard system does not produce many amps especially at low rpm?
I would like to know which upgraded systems are recommended by members?
Any of the three phase ones work well. If you are worried about a three phase leaving you stranded in the future, then go with the MOCO'S as any dealer should have parts. Hope this helps.
OP - thanks for asking this questions as I had the same thoughts.
I would like to go with a larger charging system as I run extra stuff on my WG (e.g. heated seat, sat radio, LED blinking lights, cell phone charger...and heated grips in the future). I see some of the touring bikes have higher amperage charging systems than the Dyna...but would they be compatible? I have done very little research, but saw this thread and wanted to ask.
i like the stock harley sealed units but also use cycle electric. They are not very pricey and work well. Just fyi i did a whole write up on charging system replacement for the evo and if you search my username in the DYNA section you can probably find it.
I have a '93 FLHS and had the brake light replaced awhile back. Since then I noticed that brake light is now staying on. The switches and stuff were replaced trying to find the problem but with no results. I was eventually left with low juice in the battery and had the stator and reg replaced. On a trip, it started raining and the next stop, it wouldn't crank. I did roll crank it and made it back. The voltage reads 11.5 volts now. Tests show proper readings but the a/c isn't enough.
I'm thinking(and thats the dangerous part) is that somewhere on the brakelight wire is a rubbed short causing a drain. Oh, brakelight did have water in it after the rain.
Any suggestions or thoughts?
