New to Evos been on a sportster a while. Couple of questions, 1. What you all running in your 5 speed? 2. Capacity? 3. When you pull the side cover should it be fluid draining out? Mine was dry. Bearings were wet though and ball and ramp had grease all over it. I say there should be fluid due to the dipstick.
I have always ran belray in my tranny's and had good luck. Sounds like your level is too low. If you pop that cover off while on the stand fluid should come out. You also check the fluid level with the dipstick while the bike is level.
Peeps run anything from ATF to fully synthetic oil to gear oil to synthetic gear oil. They'll all work fine. Some people don't think fully synthetic oil has as good of anti shear properties as the others and therefore insist on something made for gear cases like the other three. I don't think there's much difference. Also note that gear oil and oil viscosities are measured differently so your 20w50 motor oil is pretty close to the same viscosity as 90W gear oil.
If you pull the side cover off your tranny without first draining the oil, you should have oil all over the place as the full mark is a little over 3/4 of an inch above the bottom of the side case. Full is at the dipstick mark with the bike upright and the dipstick placed into the hole but not screwed in. Capacity is around 26 oz when dry.
The grease is because most manuals state to put some thick wheel bearing grease on the ***** and the inside of the ramps before assembly.
In my 87 FLHTC, I run BelRey. Also have used HD brand. HD Shop manual says 1 pint capacity. My dip stick has F and A lines. I like to keep it close to the F line.
You must work at the dealer that only put 18oz of fluid in my tranny which is why the transmission is out of the bike getting at least the main shaft bearing replaced. You're even in Northern Ohio!
Sorry, couldn't help it. 16oz capacity? do you have a 4-speed in an '87?
You have a 5 speed tranny on an EVO? Then when slowing down for a stop don't slow it down by gearing the tranny down. I have seen a lot of them eat themselves up doing this. Now fifth to fourth is a bit different.
I use Spectro Gear Guard....its such a pretty colour....
Yep use the Spectro Heavy Duty Gear Guard myself. Shifts so much better since I switched. And did so after talking with the guys from Baker Drivetrain at the SmokeOut a few years ago.
Capacity according to manual is 1.5 pints but it is usually only about 16 ounces till it reads full.
