Forums and phones don't mix very well. That said, after interpreting, I always thought that an oil fix on a gasket on an Evo was just that. . . a fix and not a real solution. The Evo motor was when the MoCo actually created a motor that didn't **** oil all over the place and need new gaskets, bolts tightened and silicone and fixes to stop it from leaking. Repair the Evo correctly and you don't have to create "fixes" to stop it from leaking. My $.02 worth.

If ur broke, then you don't need to worry about pistons, rings and the like. Fix the gaskets and ur good. As far as the stripped output shaft, I'm assuming you're saying your shifter arm assembly is stripped so the linkage doesn't hold. That's kinda tough to do since there's no real pressure on the splines unless someone rode around with the linkage not tightened down. I don't know what all has to come apart to pull just the arm because I never had to just pull that. Someone else may be able to give you more insight. It should just be the outer primary and the top of the tranny, but I'm not positive about that.

Oh, and welcome to the forums. Lots of experienced people here. Someone should be able to give you better detail about what you need than my generalizations.

You can change the shifter arm without removing the primary provided you can get the gearbox inner cover off.....sometimes they are easy to do and sometimes you will need a puller to remove it. Top of the gearbox comes off real easy.

Once off, it gives you just enough wiggle room to do the job...I have done it this way on a 96 Dyna and it saved heaps of time.

When you replace the base gaskets, use the new metal gaskets for a permanent fix. I'd be willing to bet that with only 30,000 miles on it, that motor needs nothing. Might do a compression check on it while you're tinkering, just to see.

I want to thank you guys for all your help .that would be great.if I circuitld get the shaft off without pulljng the primary , I was told I had to pull all the. Gears out of the transmission and had to pull the front drive pulley/sprocket in order to so? Also I'm a little concerned with the lifters at 30k. Should I wait til one goes bad? Or jusr do them all now? And how about a stock vs jims. Thanks guys I'm looking to get my gaskets this weekend either mls james or cometic any preferance?

I've known guys to just tack weld the shifter arm to the shaft until they were able to afford something better, or had to get into the tranny for something else. It couldn't hurt. think about it, the shaft is already ruined.

You have the improved lifters in your '97 (the ones with the larger tappet axle and no inner race). I had one of the earlier style tappet rollers fail at 48,000 miles. The new design is supposed to be better, but I still always change mine every 40,000 miles, just for peace of mind. "Quick install" adjustable push rods make it easy to change them without having to open the rocker boxes. You're tearing down the top end anyway, so it's a moot point in your case.

Hayden Oil fix, I did the hayden oil fix, just remember you only get one shot at lining thing up correctly. I am leak free 3 years. I have used the james base metal gaskets as well as a previous poster. 1999 Heritage Softail.

You can repair the shifter shaft without having to remove the inner primary. Look at the fix here: http://betterlever.com/index.php
