Default Lifter install question

To install new lifters on an Evo, do you have to remove the lifter blocks, or can you just remove the adjustable pushrods, then the lifters, and reinstall in reverse. Any tips for making this job easier? I have a factory shop manual and it shows the lifter blocks removed, but that is in conjunction with a complete engine rebuild, not just replacing the lifters.

You must remove the lifter blocks, the lifters don`t come out the top.
