Dude calls me and says he is going on a month-long road trip to the South Island and he needs new brake pads....oh, and there is a "bit of a noise" that has been going on for a coupla weeks.
I change the pads (which involved unblocking the return passage in the master cylinder) and start the motor.
Christ on a bike, what a racket!!!! It sounded like the mains were shot.
"You been riding this for two weeks like this?"
"Yes...is it serious?"
"You might not be going on holiday"
"Bugger"
I tightened the very slack primary chain and it lost the slapping noise but the "rumble, rumble, clunk" was no better.
I whipped off the primary and the crankshaft nut was loose, so loose it was trying to grind its way out through the primary!!
180 ft/lbs of torque and some red loctite later....all good, perfect even.
I checked the clutch nut while I was in there too but it was fine.
The bigger the pre-trip drama, the better the road trip I always say....this guy is going to have the best one yet!!
