I was planning on scheduling the installation of a new cam (andrews ev27) with new lifters & bearings. Then every guy i ride with told me this was a horrible idea & that I will lose reliability & consistency in the idle of my Harley. Also I've read with the ev27 there is no need to do lifters just cam n bearings?
So can anyone please shed some light on this???
my set up right now is all stock original 1989 FLHS expect S&S carb & Samson true duals small diameter drag pipes.
So over all do I need to replace lifters, what about idle, reliability, & will I see a good torque & low rpm performance increase with this or these upgrade(s).
"Every guy you ride with" is talking outta his collective ***....EV27 is the way to go but I think your bike is on the cusp of the piston change....can't use it with flat top pistons so you need to find out if it has valve cutouts...I might be wrong about the year it changed and no doubt someone here will know for sure.
If your bike has over 35k miles you should do lifters anyway.....the stock ones will work but they may be getting past their use-by date.
Bike will wake up nicely with the new cam :-)
Everything they told you about your idle is BS....you may get more valve train noise but that don't matter.
I put in an EV-27 about 2 years ago and loved it from the start. Not sure who you are riding with but they are completely WRONG. My idle is fine. You might get some gear whine (I did) but it will go away in around 5k miles (mine did).
It is safe to assume your buddies are Twinkee riders and a EV27 is a great bolt in cam, new lifters. inner bearing and maybe a little carb tweak and smile.
Running a 590 lift aggressive Woods cam with the rest of mods and idles solid as a rock, reliable as a $24,000 new bikes I sometimes ride with. a EV27 is a baby version of the Woods design so go for it.
The only thing about some Andrews grinds is they're an old grind,it's ramp up up speeds are a little harsher than some of the newer grinds,saying that the first thing I do is give her some compression and an EV46.
I ran my ev27 with stock pistons and it worked really well, then i put in 9.5 to 1 pistons in and it works like a dream, over 20,000 miles in two years with no reliability issues at all. My motor is out of a 96 so I did have valve reliefs in the stock pistons.

Thanks for the response! They are old men set in their ways lol. I have just under 71k on the bike. So lifters will be replaced, I plan on Jim's Big Axel lifters. As for the pistons, I have no idea..
Thanks guys for all the quick & detailed responses. I've been reading hours & hours for the past couple weeks, talk to mechanics, guys from work & the guys I ride with...only to have a lot of mixed opinions. I plan on sticking with the ev27, doing the lifters, cam bearing, & probably push rods. I just know it's only like $150 for the pushrods & the adjustable make the entire process easier from what I have read. This way less has to be messed with on an already great running engine.
If you search for EV27 posts in here stand back for the flood! It is the cam most often used I would guess, by a country mile. Either change your friends or tell them nothing, just fit and enjoy!
Thanks once again for all the responses. As I said most of these guys are older guys set in their ways( all retired) I ride with all my dads friends since no one around here my age has a Harley or a bike. Anyways I'm waiting on a second quote from a guy with an amazing reputation! I'll try to keep you guys posted but I honestly forget to check the forums...all this snow should make it easier since there isn't much else to do.
