Or crimp and heat shrink.

There you go. After you crimp the connector, tug on the wires to make sure the connection is strong, then heat shrink it to keep out moisture.

Hi guys!

Wanted to let you know that before doing the "operation" I will change the original relay - wich I don't think has been replaced from 1992 (my father doesn't remember if his mechanic at that time did.) - and see how the bike start reacts.

Instead of the original Harley, just purchased the following one, wich hopefully will solve the problem. If it doesn't, I'll finish it by adding the cable, and will have relay for years.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
CRANE CAMS 8-3000 START BOOST RELAY FOR HARLEY

This start boost relay provides full battery voltage to the coil during cranking, eliminating the 1-2 volt drop through the wiring harness in single-fire applications. Makes start-up quicker and easier, especially with high compression or stroker engines.

Fits 1970 - up Harley-DavidsonŽ big twins and SportsterŽ models with electronic start.

CRANE INFORMATION PDF
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I know adding the cable will directly solve the problem, but as I don't trust if the existing relay works 100x100 ok, thought about this solution before doing anything else.

Anyone tried this relay? thoughts?

Cheers,

That is just a pre-packaged version of the added relay I described in the other thread. You probably would benefit from a new relay, but the kit you linked to is excessive and more expensive than you need. Just get a standard relay and if you still have the occasional click, add the feed wire like the original plan above.

If you look closely at the package it says that it is not a replacement for the origional starter relay.

Thanks for the notes D1gger, texashillcountry, RidemyEVo!
Will let you know how/when I sort it out.

Best,

Yes, it´s for adding it as a second relay, keeping the original in place.

For what it is worth I called Crane and the technician I talked to said he saw no reason you couldn't replace the stock relay with theirs.

The difference between the stock relay and the crane one is that the crane one is a 40 amp relay and the stock one is 30 amp and the mounting tab is wider on the crane relay.

Thank you, Texas!

Glad to know it can replace the old one. I emailed them to check and today answered the following (I imagine in order to make D1ggers' two relay way and get full potential):

"The Start Boost relay does not replace the original starter relay. The original stays where it is undisturbed. This unit changes where the coil gets power from within the circuit. A certain amount of rewiring will be needed. It is not too extensive though.

You will need to find the wire that supplies power to the coil. It should be white. That wire is removed from the coil and goes to the 86 terminal on the relay. You will need to make a new wire to go from the 85 terminal to ground. A new wire from the battery to the 87 terminal. And a new wire from the 30 terminal to the coil where you took the original power wire from."
