It matters very much if the air cleaner isn't bolted to the heads......its the only thing that stops the carby falling off!!
I was speaking of the CV carb being bolted to the air cleaner, instead of the o-ring joint of the Mikuni, and that neither system mattered, as the carb wouold still fall off the manifold if the air cleaner is not bolted to the heads.
I fixed it today by drilling holes through a pair of 1.25" long 1/2 -13 bolts and using a washer to bolt the air cleaner base to the heads. I rode it about 100 miles or so today and its good now. I do think I am going to get a SE or Big Sucker base to replace the factory A/C base.
I wasn't aware the bike had a Mikuni on it either. I assumed it was the stock CV carb. No one else I ride with has a carb'd EVO bike, so I had nothing to compare it to. The bike runs really well, and I have smoked several 88 cu in TC bikes, and it is on par with 96/6 speed bikes I ride with. It has a Crane HI-4 ignition it as well. It is a 3 owner bike, and guy I got it from didn't know what mods had been done to it. I don't think it has a cam judging by the sound of it, but it does really run good.

Sweet, I found the wording of your post a bit confusing but then I live upside down and speak "Kiwi"
you cant just bolt the aircleaner to the heads. the engine breathes through them two bolts.it will cause the gaskets to fail and oil will blow out everywhere from the trapped pressure.you should get some stock mounting bolts, or at least drill a small breather hole through the mounting bolts.

I can tell it's a Mikuni from the picture in your avatar. That's a good running carb, as I can attest to.
