i am from the dyna side looking to help a friend , my friends has an 85flt, after 15 minutes of riding or so, then engine just dies, and won't restart until it has cooled off, any ideas what could cause this, bike is totally stock and he hasn't riden for awhile as he has no cash to fix and i want to help him out.
I think this one is coming down to electrical - voltage regulator maybe? Coil? Bike doesn't want to make a spark when it is hot. more info needed...but just to get the ideas flowing, theres where id start.
it could be as silly as spark plug wires that are baked. i hate electric gremlins.
Get it running from cold and aim a heat gun at the nose cone, if it cuts out before 15 mins then its the ign pick up..this is just about the only failure symptom the pick up gives.
It could be the coil but they usually misfire badly before cutting out so I am thinking pick up.
If you cool the nose cone (timing cover) rapidly and it starts again that will also prove the pick up theory.
If its heat related and predictable its usually that but the module can also do this....substitution is the only reliable test.
I had the same problem with my Cub Cadet, yah I know we're talking scooters here but same problem and it turned out to be the ignition module. Gets hot, cuts out. Cools off restarts. Hey come to think of it it happened to my 88 Chevy PU. It turned out to be the ignition module on that also. It was mounted on top of the intake manifold were it got nice and hot. Ignition Module dude check it out. They all operate on the same principle.
