Default Cam Shim Question

I was trying to put my ev27 in today (sill waiting on heads and cyl. from vee twin) and noticed that that I have a large amount of end play even with a .55 shim in...I could put the .55 and the .60 that I have in at the same time and it still would not get me to the .15 spec...what gives. nose cone is torqued with a relatively new gasket. Was I supposed to put the shim from the oem back in there with the new shim?

That's a good question. Last time I had my cam out, I noticed I had no cam shim at all, just the "spacer washer". I assumed that WAS the cam shim, as that's all that was in there, just one washer and nothing else. End play was fine as I remember. My parts manual ('94) lists no "cam shim" part numbers, just the "thrust washer"-part number 25550-57. Is this right?

Just so we\re on the same page this is the cam spacer I'm referring to

other than that nothing is need unless there's too much end play.

I needed a .65 plus the .60 spacer to get me to within spec. You can pull the cam and measure it and the old one with a mic or a vernier caliper then check the difference

Nope, I thought it was supposed to be replaced by the cam shim. So the cam shim goes up against the gear spacer washer?

There was nothing that looked like that in the cam chest. but, there was a large washer that went between the cam bearing and where I would put a shim. I bet that washer was supposed to go back in there.

OE shim goes in as well with 88 and later bikes as EV cams are made to fit pre-87 bikes as well and they have a shorter cam by about 50 thou I think it is.

That cam spacer is incorrect, its a tab washer and probably not hardened, you gotta get the correct ones which have no tabs (shovel are the same) it doesn't matter how many shims you put on, only that the end play is correct.
