Default How hot should my starter get?

So, I buttoned up the primary, and tried and tried to get her started.

Battery was a bit low, so I stopped and felt the starter.. Ouch that thing was hot!
Too much cranking? Another problem possibly?

Noooooooo. I'm asking if it's normal for a starter to get REALLY hot if its used too much at one time.

Yep... pretty much. That's why you are not supposed to keep cranking on it for long periods of time.

if the starter is not turning, the windings can burn up. ( if you hear a whine, thumb off the button)

is that what OP meant by low battery...not enough juice to turn the starter over ?

and then as it gets hot, there is more resistance, which causes more heat...the snake eats it's tail and poof smoke.

and a new expensive starter.

try again with a fully charged good battery

YES!!!! I knew if I waited long enough, I would get the answer.....I had been cranking it for 5-6 second bursts.

The battery is 9 months old, but did not come up to full charge on the trickle charger over night.

you need a "real" charger...a trickle charger ( tender type) is meant to maintain a charge- not build a charge.

a 2 or 5 amp charger is the ticket ( I think 10 amp too much) and get it on there at least 24 hours- make sure the battery doesn't get overly hot when charging and in a ventilated area

You must be psychic! I had her on a real charger overnight, and pushed the button around 10. Just got home from a 175 mile ride!!!!

Purred like a kitty!
