Hmmmm, I wouldn't go putting seals in backwards, they are there to do a specific job...
Here's the skinny on which way the seal goes in , stock system with normal primary the seal should be facing into the motor . It's designed that way to keep hot & expanding oil from the primary pushing by into the motor . Only time you reverse the seal with the face out is when you run a dry primary with a belt system then it's purpose is to stop oil from coming out of the motor .
OP You had a LOT of oil get pushed into the primary rather suddenly and no seal is going to prevent it it's under that much pressure . Check you breather system make sure nothing is plugged or blocked off and the oil return system to make sure it's going back to the tank like it's supposed to .
Don't know about the later years but HD did have some issues with Evo's and the steel boss cast into the case holding the stator working loose and it had the EXACT same symptoms , pushing oil into the primary.
