Default My new (to me) evo!!

Here she is! '96 FXDL...

I've wanted a HD most of my adult life, and I finally have it! Still hasn't really sunk in yet. She is almost completely stock and w/ 14k on the odo, barely used! Since I am a total newb to HD I'll probably ask a few annoying questions on here, please go easy on me, lol!
The only issue she has so far is that the petcock leaks when the valve is open, but not at all when closed. I'm guessing I need a gasket or o-ring there?
I plan on getting the service manual for her, as well as endless reads on here.
Cosmetically, looks like she needs just a good wash, polish, and wax. Very, very light corrosion on some of the chrome, mild dulling on the trees and lowers, but no rust anywhere (she was garage-kept), and dime-size paint scuff on the rear fender and pen-head size chip in the clear coat on the front fender. PO has just let her sit for awhile for the most part.
I ended up handing over $5800 for her, not bad, IMO. So, what do you guys think? Did good? Anything I need to do right away (evo-wise) that I'm not aware of?
Can't get the sh*t eating grin off my face!!

Oh, the bars and mids gotta go... My right hip cramped up on the 15 minute test ride, lol! And those bars feel very unnatural to me. Probably do some medium drags w/ medium risers.

The one thing I would do, I would have to do is ditch the buck-horns and grab some apes.

Awesome deal! Well done! Those Buckhorn bars do nothing for the handling, I put high westerns on mine and its the most comfortable long distance bike I have owned so far :-)

Agreed. Those are some of the most awkward feeling bars I've ever experienced. I thought about apes, but I ran those on my last bike and want to try something different. I think I might try a medium/wide width drag bar w/ some 3"ish pull back risers. I think they would compliment the DL's sporty, aggressive style.

Default Sweet!

Nice ride! Love me some 96 Lowrider! Mine was low mileage, also when I bought her. Great handling scoot! Enjoy!
Ride Safe,
Harold

I'd call that a good buy. And no Chinese bearings to worry about. I see the front tire is a Dunlop; with 14K, it could be the original, they seem to last forever if low mileage - but not safe forever. I'd check the manufacturing dates on the tires, even if the PO said he just got them. Regardless of mileage, the traction will suffer noticeably after 5 or 6 years. If you do get new tires, consider new valve stems, too, especially if they're rubber (I always replace those with steel). Unless you're really sure what's in there and when it was put in, I'd change all the oils. You mentioned a service manual, which sounds like you intend to do at least some of the maintenance yourself; I'd really recommend getting a motorcycle jack, hard to do a lot of things on a Harley with the wheels grounded. I like EVO's, have an 89 Tour Glide. Hope you enjoy yours.
