Just out of curiosity what if you ran a chain final drive.
Would that stand up any better than a belt?

It would be a disaster with a chain because it would chew up the sprockets (and the chain) in no time and be really harsh. Probably take out the tranny output bearing fairly pronto as well.
You just have to accept that H-D knew what they were doing when they rigid mounted the Softie, better design brains than ours would have pondered the issue for many years.
This guy mounted it from the rear tranny mount on bronze bushes so it only moves up and down and a rubber front mount....this will work until the bronze bushes wear and then it will be a problem.

Look on the last of the links that were posted earlier. Basically its a Softie but the swingarm pivots off the tranny like a Dyna and not off the frame.....imagine a Road King that mated with a Softail.
