In Donny Peterson's "Unauthorized Technical Guide to Harley Davidson 1936-2008 Volume I: The Twin Cam" on page 42 he states that the Evo oil filtration is designed to filter particles as small as 30 microns ( a great improvement over the earlier shovel and pan systems). He then states that the twinkee filters particles as small as 10 microns. Interesting fact per Donny is the twinkke filters oil before the oil enters the engine whereas our beloved evo's filter the oil after it comes out of the engine.
My question and discussion point is: If I ask for a filter at the HD store for my 95 evo RK, will they give me a different part number than for a twinkee filter?
As a sidenote, I have noticed a independent shop using the same K&N filter for both.
If you use the 5mi on the Evo, you'll end up trapping your oil in the head, starving the bottom end.. Take it for what you will, but I'm not going to do it. I think its a very bad idea..
We had a long debate about this some while ago. There are two filters for a jolly good reason - whatever that is! Use the correct one and ignore 'experts' who reckon there is a better way.
the difference is in the gearing - the evo still has an oil pump gear set designed at the turn of the century, and it does not have the ability to over come the high return resistance in the twinkie filter - so the load on the evo oil pump is 10 times what is was designed for
evo has 4 straight cut gears driving each other < harley did that in 1917
twinkie is a gerotor pump < like what is in an automatic transmission - much high operating pressures with less drag on the engine

Excellent Video. Skip down to 7:19 and see what he says. I'm in the Heating and Cooling business and I cringe when I'm in Lowes or HD and I see people buying (cheap) Pleated AC Filters. Things Change when you change filters that a Machine/System was Designed for.
