Got a look at it with the full story. The cam bearing went bad but didn't come apart until the cam was removed, and then it all went everywhere. It was the original INA bearing from new, original cam spacer, and an EV27 Andrews cam. The cam also chewed up some metal by the breather gear and pieces of that were already in the breather gear. Options from the shop are: $3500 to pull engine and clean it out and reinstall it, $4500 for an HD refurb., or an aftermarket crate for cost plus $1000 for labor. And even with cleaning out the original there's no guarantee all pieces are found. And if I pull the motor it only makes sense to upgrade from a stock 80 to say a 110 with a six speed tranny. If that's the case thinking s &s or revtech.
Your best option is like I said... have a reputable indy re-do the bottom end for you, slap the cases back together, and rebuild it yourself. You'll save a few thousand! An S&S 89" stroker kit can be had for a reasonable price as well. No need for a 100+" motor and all that hooplah. An 80" with a mild cam and maybe a bump in compression will do everything you need it to do.
I'd find a good indy and go the stroker route. Then it is all factory numbers on the outside. It sucks this happening when you just get it. I hope you got a deal on it. I'd also pass on the 6 speed. But that is just me.

What's the cost on something like a 89" kit? I was reading about these the other day. There's no way to get the bearings out for him without splitting the case?

That is the only way to insure getting all the pieces out. I've heard guys counting the number of roller bearings and using a magnet, but looking at his pics it needs a cleaning.

And with the previous owner being so up front about the condition of the bike has me worried about the rest of it as well, i.e. transmission and primary. The shop also gave me the option of putting it back together as is and sending it to auction, all said and done could profit anywhere from 3-4K as is. This is a shop I've dealt with numerous times in the past and never had a problem or been done wrong by them. Just wish I'd gotten this bike from them, then I wouldn't have had this issue.

If this is gonna make you not trust the bike for the rest of the time you own it I would sell it as you will always be worried about something and that will kill all the riding pleasure you will have.
That said I would be willing to bet your tranny and primary are fine.
It sucks that you are having this problem but as I said with tools and space it is an easy fix. It just takes time to dig that far. Space can be found if you really want to fix it. Stack the parts in the living room if that is what it comes to.
