This is a shop I've dealt with numerous times in the past and never had a problem or been done wrong by them. Just wish I'd gotten this bike from them, then I wouldn't have had this issue.
You say your selling it for that??

Mine came apart a few weeks back ,But guess I'am lucky cause it's not as bad as that , Mine broke a tooth off a couple of different gears but I found all the parts in the cam chest , so a little cleaning up & getting all the parts ready , Good luck on your rebuild , keep your bike & go for the rebuild

OP, most bike owners don't know enough, or don't pay attention enough to know if there is anything wrong with their bike or if it is making odd noises.

As to the room situation... I lived in a townhouse when I rebuilt mine. You can do it man, we got faith in you. Mine has been a solid machine since I rebuilt it.

These kind of problems can easily be a surprise. I wouldn't assume there are tons of other hidden issues or that the owner was intending to cheat you. Lots of owners just don't know better. Guess it depends in your comfort to auction or fix. I'd vote fix if the rest of the bike checks out, but sometimes you just want to wash your hands of a bad experience. Problem is, used can always be a crap shoot. If you go the fix route you might forever add to your skill set as an owner. Could be pretty awesome in the end. Liking Evos can be a rescue job. You could be saving a good dog from the pound unless another forum member adopts it.

Gonna swing by the local MoCo tomorrow and see how much for a factory remanufactured motor. My big worry is the FI system if it were to go bad, finding the parts would be hard enough let alone expensive. Just a lot to take in and I have to give the indy an answer by Monday.

Splitting the case really isn't that bad. It sounds scarier than it is. Get the FSM. You CAN clean the whole thing out completely once you split the case.

my 2 cents pull the motor yourself grab the good towels out of the bathroom set it on the kitchen counter and fix it. 130.00 gaskets, 10.00 bearing, 150.00 new cam, 80.00 lifters, 9.00 tube of yamabond, 25.00 for a manual. and if you really want to go all out a set of rings 30.00 and a valve job around 150.00. 500.00 is a lot better than 4000.00. i have seen way worse and all i did was clean it out and only replaced what was broke.
if you just want to throw a bunch money at it. i would say get rid of it the bike is not worth as much as your getting ready to spend on it

concerning room, i did mine (exactly what you will be doing) at my bar in the kitchen (closed) i have a garage but it is not heated and it was blizzarding at the time, like has been stated splitting the cases isn't that bad and you will know it is clean. lots of help here and encouragement. my rebuild included an oil pump and cost less than $600.00.
