No problem, like I said i've been fighting this problem since I've bought this bike 11 years ago and so far NOTHING has helped!

The Evos seem to work well but have a long detent and to me that is a like poor design.

I've been missing shifts for YEARS and wouldn't have found this cure hadn't it been for this forum!

I'm sure hoping that the false neutrals will go away, seems like it shifts significantly better than before and that's even without the Redline gear oil in it!

I'm waiting on my Jim's inner race installation tool and then it'll be done.

I've seen SO MANY hammer mechanics that have beaten bearings on these trap doors, shafts & cases. They fail to understand how harmful that is to your bearings.

I have completely rebuilt my transmission and refuse to take a hammer to ANYTHING!

My bike didn't get 140,000 miles on it by accident.

Speaking of which here's a short walk around of my bike and our 100,000 mile rollover back in 2011.

Thanks for the compliment!

Just to throw more info into the mix...

There are actually 2 different part number shifter drum designs that use the roller detent (interchangable).

Well isn't that unbelievable! Its obvious that they were trying everything under the sun to fix the problem.

I really like the Baker version, definitely seems like a much improved version of the shift drum.

You'll need to switch to pillar block bolts to Allen's or or the spring will hit the head of the bolt.

You'll also need to get a new neutral safety switch from the Twinkie

There are very few problems with false neutrals on the 5 speed transmissions, old or new type drum.

Excess end play of shift drum, worn shift dogs on the gears, out of adjustement shift pawl centering screw, bent shift forks, bent shift pawl, all can occur.

But there is nothing secret about getting these transmissions to shift properly.

That's fine I have documented a hundred forty thousand miles on this motorcycle and I'm sick and tired of it. I've tried everything if this don't fix it I will personally catch on fire!

Kenny,

I was watching a video from sputhe the other day about assembling a 5 speed, and saw something that might be worth investigating. It's about setting up the shift drum, that might be worth looking into.

Scan through to 49 minutes and 30 seconds into it. If you've got a transmission housing that is machined a bit off kilter, it might be a lack of throw into the gear you get a false neutral. I'd be curious once you put her together what the dog engagement looks like... As a combo of a worn thin shift fork, and a drum that is mounted too far out of line to get a good dog engagement might be worth looking into.

thank you for the reply I have updated my 1998 Road Glide to a 2005 twin cam transmission and have never been happier! It shifts fantastic now. it might be worth noting that I have tried everything to get this bike to shift right.

I have pretty much exhausted all my efforts this upgrade was the best thing under the sun.

this bike has a hundred forty thousand miles on it and it feels like it's brand-new now

So... I thought I would come back here and recommend this to anyone who has a 1998 Evo FLT or FLH 5 speed that also has false neutrals and missing shifts issues.

TAKE NOTE THAT IT WILL NOT WORK ON ANY EARLIER EVO'S DUE TO THE MAIN SHAFT BEING LONGER (9 Disc clutch), THIS IS AN UPGRADE FOR1998 ONLY!

That doesn't mean that your 1993 or whatever cant be upgraded, ANYTHING can be modified or upgraded but it will cost you more and you'll need to buy more parts like an inner primary maybe? Clutch hub? Etc etc...

Below is a link to the exact same gear set purchased that I purchased on Flea bay.

Simply upgrade that gearset with a Baker Shift drum, shifter pawl and Twinkie neutral switch and you'll be on business. No extra parts needed whatsoever.

The differences are literally night and day, TOTALLY SERIOUS.

NO MORE FALSE NEUTRALS DURING WOT SHIFTS!

You'd thank me later, just make sure you're a seasoned mechanic who has all of the special tools needed for a job of this nature to include Jim's inner race installation tool and a means of pressing in your final drive gear to the larger left side of the case.

I used no hammers whatsoever on my install.

I have roughly $600.00 into everything because I put new bearings and seals in throughout my transmission. I also had to pay for my Jim's puller/installation tool.

Best money I've spent on my bike.

Good luck!

This is not an upgrade for 1998 only.

The latest model year 5 speed gearset can go in any 5 speed case (belt drive models with diaphragm type clutch).

On late `84 through `89 the clutch must also be changed, because the earlier clutch hub mounts on a taper.

On `90 and later models, the entire gearset can be swapped out, plug and play.

Late `84 through `89 can also be swapped out, but the clutch must also be changed, because the earlier mainshafts were tapered, as was the clutch hub.

No need to change inner primary.
