I have a 2000 FLHT I recently purchased. it still has the stock exhaust on it and as soon as I got it I drilled out the baffles. problem is the bike is still too quiet for my taste. I fully believe in "Loud Pipes Save Lives" and would like it to be much louder. im looking at 2 different slip on's that are budget priced for me. one with baffles and one without. with what im looking for I would assume that no baffle would be the way to go but I have been wrong before and want to make sure before I take the plunge. also not sure of the effects on performance either will have. I have already put a jet kit in the carb for opening up the exhaust and plan to tune it again after changing.
Nine times out of ten, removing baffles kills the bottom/midrange torque. The only exception that I am aware of is removing the baffles from the stock pipes, as you have already done.
Cycle Shack make slip-ons with baffles that are loud (since that's what you want) and still perform very well.
JMO, but why not spend another $200 and get something that will REALLY sound better? Try Vance & Hines short shots or long shots. Guaranteed loud and sound great. I run mine with Quiet Baffles, but they're anything but quiet. Again, JMO.

So, he should pay $200 more for pipes that kill his low/mid torque?
I get that the V&H would be a better route to go but that's just not in the cards right now. Got too many other irons in the fire LOL. I think im going to give the Cycle Shack ones a try. then if I don't care for them I will swap them out later when things slow down. right now I just hate the sound of the stocks and cant imagine anything else being any worse. main reason for my post was about the baffle/no baffle causing low end power problems. which everyone answered for me. Thanks!
For 106,000 miles my bike was pretty much stock 88 Ultra. Do to running a HD sidecar for the past 20K I wanted more low to mid torque as when I am packed up for a road trip including I the total weight is around 1600 to 1700 pounds. I wanted some less restricted pipes but still wanted to hear my stereo, intercom and CB as I do a fair about of traveling. I got a VERY good deal on some S&S touring quite slip on s and they are the best sounding pipes I have heard to date. Not TOO loud but sure can hear the DEEP tone they put out.
My understanding of the OP's post was that he already re-jetted his carb and will tune it to the exhaust. One advantage of a carb over EFI. JMO
You can't 'tune out' the loss of torque. It is what the pipes will give it. You'll lose torque w/o baffles. Tuning will only keep it running with a proper air/fuel ratio.
