TC88 performance upgrade(
Newbie here. Just posted this in the new members area. Thought I might get a better response here..
Hello All,
I'm 53 and ride every chance I get, which is a lot in Sacramento CA. I have a stock 2003 FXSTBi Nightrain with 30k.
It has a Stage 1 Kit EFI (air filter/breather) and Python 3's Exhaust. I didn't recalibrate it and it ran just fine. I treat it nice, but I do "get it on" occasionally. I have only hit the rev limiter once,OK maybe twice,(long ago) by accident (didn't know it was there.)
Since I had the extended warranty and was having surgery, I decided to take the Train in and let the dealer do the cam follower repair. Good thing, as after teardown, they found the crank was moving (in the wrong directions) and causing noticeable wear. About $2200 repair for a $50 deductible.(Darn warranty was worth it.)
What I would like to know is just a few opinions about upgrades while its apart. I initiated the conversation with the dealership and it quickly escalatedto a 96ci kit (barrels and pistons, etc) My out of pocket would be $800. But I know a little about engines and I thinkuthis is just a quick buck or two for the dealer. Yeah, it might be a little faster. What I would like to know is, wouldn't the followingseem more logical?
1) Cyl Head Work (i.e.) Port both(In&Exh) & Polish only(Exh)
& upgrade valves and springs
2) Upgrade Cams to S&S 510g kit
3) Asjustable pushrods & roller rockers
4) Dial it in
Since the engine is going to be completely apart, I pay only parts and (machine shop work) and I spend about the same amout
but get a whole lot more bang for the buck. I would be willing to bet it will blow the wheels off any TC95. (based on the amt of
a/f the engine will move). ANYBODY care to comment?
And Thanks to all

1) Cyl Head Work (i.e.) Port both(In&Exh) & Polish only(Exh): very good, also cc. the heads.
& upgrade valves and springs: not needed. Can check your spring pressure. If bad upgrade with a brand quite similar at stock. Don't over charge your valve train!
2) Upgrade Cams to S&S 510g kit: good bolt in cams.
3) Asjustable pushrods & roller rockers: roller rockers not needed with these cams. Used for hight lift whichis not the case of the 510.
4) Dial it in: notmandatory in this case but can bedone to be "sure".
Don't thinkyou will "blow the wheels" of any "good"TC 95 with only these light88" modifications!
With these mods. you also may upgrade to 95" with only boring your jugs and fitting Wiseco piston kit 9:1#K1719and gasket kit #W5786.
The advantage is some more torque and HP. with keepingengine life stock like.
Good luck.

I didn't mention it because it's a very low cost part which may help later as well in the same kind of mod. he may choose the 570 and thatset of camsneed these adjustable pushrods.

Just left the HD shop. Looks like they know their stuff. I'm goingwith a 1550 "kit"HD Pistons (forged)HD BarrelsHD Pushrods (adjusable)(for future head work or upgrades)
S&S 510 Gear Drive Cam KitEng already has stg 1 A/F and Python 3'sNOTE:HD doing the Crank/Flywheel assy under warranty*, so I have just minimal labor to install the above parts. I'm debating port/polish or new HP headShould be pumping 90+ ftlbs torque w/o the head work, and 100+ with. Thanks againDoug D*Flywheel/crank was "walking(side to side) causing bearing race wear. Guess it was a good thing I took it in when I did.
